Now I see what Tom was getting at. Keeping the CCD normal to the
optical axis would be a problem with a big CCD. I think you
could look at the image itself and know if the alignment was off
and by how much. It is likely cheaper to build in adjustments
(shims?) them to depend on exact machining.
