In answer to Herb, you can *detect* objects over
a wide dynamic range, but you can't do good photometry
on them.  Stars near the sensitivity limit have huge
photometric errors.  Saturated stars are certainly
visible, and can be measured, but again with huge
errors.  That is the origin of the 4-5mag 'sweet spot'
I talked about.  For another example, the
FASTT telescope, purely doing astrometry, can measure
over an 8mag range with reasonable accuracy, but is
still limited to 5mags for photometry.  Photometric
precision is a tight constraint.
