A few ideas...

Some of this _is_ likely due to matching errors.
Currently the match algorithm does not look at
magnitude, color or anything other then location
in the sky.  You could try to hunt down the bad
matches.  Next question is how.

Crowding may be effecting us.  You could try to look
at number of detections as a function of distance to
the nearest star.

If the VCO is off the stars will streak in the east
west direction.  Stars with a close star to the
east or west would only be detected if the VCO were
set perfectly.  If can not be set perfectly because one
VCO controls all three cameras and there is some
drift in the VCO.
