I studied databases in school but the way it is taught at
some universities it is handled as a branch of mathmatics.
They don't let you near a computer. After reading a few
textbooks that read like "theorem proof theorem proof..."
I kind of lost interrest for 10 years or so. A while back
I decided I'd better learn
so I just sat down at a computer and did some toy projects.
Theory is good to know but you need to just play with a database
and try examples from an introductary book.

There is some good documentation at
http://www.postgresql.org/docs/ The link called "Tutorial"
is good. It has a mix of theory and simple examples.

There are many books out on SQL. There is even a
"SQL for Dummies" book out that does not look bad.
(no joke check on amazon.com)
