Just to be (perhaps) first in the queue...
IRAF used to make a copy of the original fits image.  A couple
of years ago they started using the original fits image, so
that part of Glenn's objection is no longer valid.
  Again, learning curves are relative.  If someone supplies
you with the set of scripts to fully process Mark IV images,
you needn't learn much about iraf at all.  Don't tell me
that it doesn't take a fair amount of time to learn Mira,
PCVista, Image Scientist or any other image processing
system, especially if you want to script.
  The important points still remain:  will your particular
software program perform the proper analysis steps, or if
not, can you modify the program in a reasonable time frame?
