Re: Need some rough numbers.
For Chris (and others interested)
1) stars per frame: depends on galactic coordinates,
filter, exposure and threshold, but I find 3000-10000.
I have *not* processed many frames near the galactic
plane.
2) frames per night: depends on observing program.
For the 4-minute-per-field, all sky survey, I get
about 20 frames per hour or about 200 frames per
mean night.
3) Nights of operation per year. I expect, once
everything is working properly, to observe 200 nights
per year. I could push that upward if I can
mechanize the shutdown procedure so that the 1.55-m
observer can shut ARNE down remotely as is currently
done with the other telescopes, and therefore make
use of marginal nights.
The detection limit is more like V=16 with reasonable
length exposures. UCAC, which goes to 16th, will have
68 million stars (1700 per square degree on average, though
this is skewed by the Milky Way) in the whole-sky catalog.
I think my numbers will be the upper limits for your
merging tasks.
