My latest Tech Note #71 on Mark IV dark images touches on this issue
of offsets. Tom's FITS header has a BZERO value of 32768 which many
FITS readers use to adjust the 16-bit value of the image data. Review
my TN for what Tom, I and Andrew have reported on ADU values vs.
various uses of this offset, and for which I offer interpretations.
Also, one could inspect my C code in that TN for how I handle the 
image 16-bit values.
