GLENN RA Bearing
I just assembled the RA bearing for GLENN. This is always a little
exciting in that I need to cool the shaft and heat the ball bearings to
make the assembly. If one does not get them positioned correctly before
the hot bearings cool and the cold shaft warms up, then you are left with a
mess. There are two parts of the assembly that have to go between the two
bearings, and there is always a chance that I will forget one. ARNE has
one part backwards because of this. But don't worry, that will be the last
thing to fail.
Normally I do this operation in the kitchen and put the shaft in the
freezer and the bearings in the oven. Today, I have a big freezer out the
balcony door, so I put the shaft there and just heated the bearings with a
heat gun. I think it is at the moment as cold out as it is in my freezer.
This means that we will shortly be ready to start wiring up GLENN.
