Gimp

Thanks to all who responded with advice on Gimp and other programs. I just
wanted a program to work on photographs, not astronomical images. I have
Image Scientist and DS9 for that. Gimp looks like the right thing.

There is a problem. Everything seems ok, except I need to install a patch
so that it can see tif and gif files. This requires putting some files in
C:\Program Files\Gimp\plug-ins and removing a file that is there.

OK, I can see this directory in Windows Explorer, but I cannot drag files
into it. It says something about a missing DLL and refuses to do
anything. DOS will not even get me to the correct directory. I suspect I
have to put the right thing for the blank in "\Program Files\". I am
looking forward to running Linux where I will be able to do anything. (And
I will get to reload the system many times when I do someting wrong. )

Per getting this patch, I am reminded of what used to be printed on cans of
"Blue Ribbon Malt". This was a quart can containing a mixture of malted
barley and hops. The label read: "CAUTION Do not mix the contents of this
can with 5 pounds of sugar, 5 gallons of water, and one cake of yeast or an
illegal brew may result." As far as I know this is still on the
label. At least it was there around 1950 when I followed the above
directions. It, of course, fist appeared during prohibition.
