Statistics are a wonderful tool; you can adapt them to give any answer...just look at politics!!

Seriously though, there has to be a starting point for any survey type, and that is usually derrived from previous statistical data. So rather than question the validity of numbers, use them as a starting point. If the numbers fail, you have a new starting point.
