8.3 is because of DOS and W3xx. And you are going to put Java on them?!!
Right...

IRAF and several other packeages can select files from header
contents, but if a package is so broken to have fit or fts hard wired
to the extention, then it needs work.

Tom on DS9, have you changed the FILTER setting in the file selector?
