Tom,
  That version of the prom code (skip 16, read 2048, skip 16, read 16)
sounds just about perfect to me.  If there are covered pixels, you
get them all along with overscan.  If they are not covered, then
you get a bigger imaging area.  Who could ask for more?
  That leaves you enough space in the memory card?  I assume you
do not read 2048 lines and so would still have less than 8MB of
needed storage?
  We are still in a very cloudy pattern.  Our monsoon started
two weeks early and instead of clearing at night as usual during
this season, it is staying cloudy.  The thunderstorms start
around noon so there is little time to work on outside hardware.
They are now backing down on their prediction of a dry spell this
next week.
