Playground - was Re: New server?
Why don't we enable CGI on the current server (Michael?). I'm not that up
on CGI and the like, so I've no idea how difficult it is to secure a HTTP
server using CGI.
With that out of the way, CGI capabilities will be enabled on the 'puter,
and I would recommend re-directing the pages requiring CGI capabilities from
the current server to the 'new one'.
Once John breaks open his firewall and gets the HTTP server setup (on some
port other than 80 I'm told), I'll create accounts for folks who want them,
and you'll be able to SSH to the machine. You can use SCP (Secure CoPy) to
copy data to/from the box. PostgreSQL will be available on it's default
port, and I believe it will require SSL for non-local connections. I
haven't played with the SSL connection option yet, but will before setting
it up. As an additional safety measure, I'll probably setup your IP address
(or range for dial-up folks like me) from which PGSQL will accept
connections.
The reason the machine will be set up this way (as secure as possible) is
that if there are any serious problems, John may pull the plug.
Other than CGI, MOD_PERL, and PostgreSQL, what would folks want? It'll have
the somewhat standard Linux tool set as a start.
