Update on playground speed
Hey all,
I just thought I'd give a quick update on the playground. John is using
StarBand (http://www.starband.com/), and the uplink speed is actually
40-50Kbits, while the downstream he's timed at over 1.2Mbits, typically
around 400Kbits. Since this machine should be a massive data sink and a
processed data source, hopefully this will still be fast enough. He still
hasn't broken open the box... Maybe this weekend.
On the possible plus side, looks like my wife is fed up with our slow
dial-up, so her company (I'm the IS department :-) ) will be purchasing
satellite internet also. The 'problem' is that it would also be StarBand.
It looks like DirecPC 2-Way may have a faster uplink (they claim 128Kbits),
but they apparently only have USB capabilities, which won't work under Linux
at this time. The other plus side is that I hope to have a new swoopy dual
Athlon setup under the X-Mass tree (after the diamond ring of course), so
this might be another source for a playground/real data.
Later,
Rob
