Tom, the solutions are:
 (a) never to run so late that the ambient light level is so high :-)
 (b) paint the vanes flat black,
 (c) put a hood over the spot where the limit test is done so that
      direct light never falls there, and
 (d) put in software so that if the delay gets too long, just stop.

(c) is the way most mechanical design engineers handle the problem: enclose
the testing mechanism in a black box.
