Re: Data Keeps Piling Up
The only reason to learn about "vi" is
1) It is the one editor you know that is installed on every system.
2) It will work even when the window system is dead or not
installed on the box. Yes, some servers have no graphic
capability.
3) It works over a slow modem connection to a remote system.
Other then that I use "nedit" which BTW comes from Fermi Lab.
The text files don't care what you used
If you could learn DOS and (what was it called) "edline"? you
can learn UNIX and vi. They are not that much different.

On another subject. I have now a computer on the Internet
that has IRAF on it. I may also install Michael's pipline on it
too. I will try and make the system available over the Internet.
I'm thinking of using some combination of SSH and VNC so that
anyone with a Java enabled browser and use the system. I'm open
to suggestions about what would be most usfull. The goal is to
allow someone to look at a bit of data without the need to have
the data or the software. So far I am happy with the speed
of the system. It's a SPARC 5 but with a high end SCSI drive
and maxed out RAM on a 1Mbps DSL line.
