Fun Looking at Data

I have spent the afternoon looking at data. I am working on a tech note to
show what various cuts on the data will do. There are lots of combinations
to explore. I am also learning how to make the gnuplot graphs come out
like I want. But It is much easier to label them with a text caption after
one has stared at them a while and thought about the data. So the pictures
will come out bare for now.

I have been looking at a single set of 56 images. This set was taken near
the galactic plane so there are lots of stars. 10,000 or so were found,
but some basic cuts reduced this to 5000. Throw away the flagged stars,
require 10 or more measurements, throw away the 99 flags, etc..

Once one throws away the stuff that is bad for one reason or another the
plots look pretty good.

It looks like one in a thousand is some sort of short term variable. There
are also trends in the data that indicate that we can do better if we work
on it.

Lots of fun ahead getting the most out of the data. I am very
encouraged. The data looks like it will be good enough for a published
catalog.
