Tom is 100% correct; do it for whatever you're in it for.

I'm an air traffic controller for a living, I get all the adrenalin rush I
need five or six days a week at work.  On my time off, I have come to enjoy
the patient accumulation and manipulation of data and information, studying
references, learning new things to work toward my goal.  Participating in
"real" science is a new frontier for me, and whatever bit part I can play
makes me happy.
