RE: H*e*l*p Needed
Tom, Rob,
It all depends on you goal. This specific task is so
simple CFITSIO.pm is not even needed. With a quick
read of "man perlre" Tom will have this done himself.
It's a matter of style if you prefer to write special purpose
programs, one per task or if you want to invest in collecting
general purpose tools. I think the answer depends on how long
you intend to be in the bussiness. Good tools pay off if you
use them daily over a long period. So you are right. Installing
IRAF so that you can make one triveal edit to one FITS file
is a wast of time. However once you do install it you will
never have to write another specialized program and it will
also allow you to do things most of us could never program
ourselves. So your options expand.
I agree, having a CFITSIO Perl mod. installed on your
system is a good general purpose tool. I could use it to,
for example, to move data between a FITS file and a PostgreSQL
database.
