Yep, I just mention things like this since every so often someone comes 
back and says "Oh! Yes! this is the well known (in my narrow circle) 
foo-bar effect."

There is a big gradient, a few thousand counts, and a big offset, possibly 
10,000 counts.

It does not make sense yet to me, but it is still early in the getting 
things working cycle.  It looks just like someone is shining a light on the 
camera.  As you know, it is not well sealed from stray light.  As I say, it 
is early, I have just figured out that it is hard to focus when pointing at 
a tree.
