Look here for a writeup of a first rate archive system

These guys are using "cdrecord" to burn the DVD-ROMs.  Your
"xcdroast" is really a GUI fron end to cdrecord as are all the
other graphical UNIX/Linux CD programs.  

ESO writes 50GB/day to DVD.
