As the saying goes, "ask and ye shall receive".

  From posting my question on the gnuplot forum, I have learned that this
feature IS available in the current development version of gnuplot! What
are the odds of that?
You can get it via CVS at gnuplot's Sourceforge site.
As a test, I've updated the plot at:
http://sallman.tass-survey.org:8080/markiv/servlet/markiv/template/Status.vm 


using the new gnuplot.
