I bought a Sony unit (DRU-510A) that writes both DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W.
It was about $350. I have seen DVD-R/W units in the $200-$250 range. I
have the Sony working for DVD-R just fine under Red Hat. You need the
latest cdrtools and cdrecord-prodvd (and if you want a GUI, something
like X-CD-Roast). It writes ISO9660 disks that other machines can read.
