Andrew and all,

I think it depends on which data you are looking at.  If the data is from 
times where I was tracking a field, then removing "bad" images seems to get 
an improvement.  If the data is from a set where the camera is pointing at 
a (relatively) random spot in the sky, then I see little improvement from 
discarding data.

I have also thrown away more than half the data.

I am still working on it.
