I've seen a few techniques used :

 - children, throwing sticks

 - spider-eating birds (or spider-eating spiders)

 - high pressure water spray

 - slingshot

 - shotgun

BTW spiders will probably not interest your local Animal Welfare or Emergency 
Services. Rescuing ~kittens~ from high places attracts more volunteers.
