Maybe common, but I've never heard of this before.

One other thing to try.  I think you can get xcdroast
to tell you the cdrecord command line it uses. 
Possibly in a log file some place?  Maybe you need to
turn on "verbose" mode or something?  If you can see
the options xcdroast passes to cdrecord then you could
just use those.
