One thing I was taught a few years ago by a Cisco engineer is that for
most switches if you connect a hub to that switch, the switch simply
starts acting as a hub.
Also (but not on the cheap ones), some switches do allow you to use more
than one port when connecting two switches to give you double the
bandwidth between the two (I had to do this on some Cisco switches about 3
years ago before installing fibre between them).
