Color index versus spectral type

  In the course of discussing the database plots with Michael Sallman,
I realized that it would be very useful to have a way to turn 
(V-I) color into spectral type.   I found one nice set of tables
here (thanks to Brian Skiff)

Nosing around in some catalogs, I noticed that the Hipparcos main
catalog contains (B-V), (V-I) and spectral type information --
all from various reference sources, not measured by the satellite
itself.  I made a few graphs from this dataset.  Perhaps someone
besides Michael will find them useful.  Look at
