Apple makes the best notebooks. Mac OS X is based on
BSD UNIX. You'd need to be a bit of an expert to be able
to tell the difference between BSD and Linux. But if
you really want the Gnome or KDE desktop then using an
Apple notebook would require to much fiddling. I use
VNC to display the Red Hat Fedora desktop from my Linux
server on my Mac. Macs come with X11 which is really all
you need. At the command line prompt Macs and Linux
is much alike. But you asked for Linux...

You can buy a notebook with Linux pre-installed.

HP and Dell both offer Linux but you have to hunt a
bit on their web sights

Almost every notebook now has a wireless network interface.
that's the way to go

One other completly different idea: I just got an HD TV.
The thing as 1080 lines of resolution and makes a very good
computer monitor that I can read from 12 feet away. It's
dead sharp. It you have one of these already all you may
need is a wireless keyboard if yo conect a computer's video
card to one of the TV's HDMI inputs
