Mark IV update: Aug 30, 2001

Tom Droege

TOM1 was run last night on the coo-coo clock mount. Sigh, I still can't see as much sky as I would like. I should be able to take data between about -3 and +8 degrees. A South-West facing doorway is just not ideal. I can now track longer. Last night I tracked for about 3 hours, but only looked at the data for an hour and a half. The image center moved about 50 pixels in that time. I have made an adjustment. We shall see if I got the sign right. The mount is now pretty well lined up to North. Good enough that the N-S movement is small for a 100 second exposure. The moon is shining on everything, so even a 100 second exposure is pushing it.

There is no sign of ice crystals. I am now using a trap with mineral oil in it. (Just Drug Store Laxative.) Possibly the other things I have used let water through. The cameras were not very cold. Possibly the ice will come back when it is darker and I try to make the cameras colder.

The stars look pretty round. Not perfect, but possibly they will get a little better with the RA adjustment. The I camera still has a fuzzier focus than the V camera.

The plan is to follow one piece of sky as long as possible. Tonight I will run for an hour or so in the old mode. This rewinds the mount position after each exposure. Every eighth exposure is a dark. I plan to run for an hour or so in this mode, and use the result for darks and flats. Then I will follow the sky for as long as the mount will track. I think about 3 hours where I am positioned. The goal is to take data to look for short period variables.
